Effect
Folic acid belongs to the B vitamins. In the body, it is converted into the active form tetrahydrofolate, which is involved in numerous biochemical reactions, in the synthesis of purine and pyrimidine compounds, in DNA synthesis, and in amino acid metabolism. Folic acid plays an important role in tissues where numerous cell divisions take place (hematopoietic system, gastrointestinal epithelium, fetal tissues).
Administration of folic acid to mothers can reduce the incidence of neural tube defects in offspring, such as spina bifida and other defects of the central nervous system that are due to disturbances in neural tube formation.
Dosage
Women who could become pregnant should take 1 tablet of FOLIK® (0.4 mg folic acid) once daily for at least one month before conception and during the first trimester of pregnancy.
