Effect
Folic acid belongs to the B vitamins. In the body, it is metabolized to tetrahydrofolate, which is involved in many biochemical reactions, including the synthesis of purine and pyrimidine compounds, DNA synthesis, and amino acid metabolism. Folic acid plays an important role in tissues where numerous cell divisions take place (hematopoietic system, epithelium of the digestive tract, fetal tissue).
Administration of folic acid to mothers can reduce the incidence of congenital neural tube defects such as spina bifida and other defects of the central nervous system, which arise from disturbances in the neural tube formation process, in their offspring.
Indications
For the prevention of folic acid deficiency in women before conception and in early pregnancy, in order to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in their offspring.
Dosage
Women of childbearing age should take 1 tablet of FOLIK® (0.4 mg folic acid) once daily for at least one month before conception and during the first trimester of pregnancy.
