Properties
Smecta is an antidiarrheal medication for adults and children from 2 years of age. The active ingredient is diosmectite (an aluminosilicate). Due to its structure and high viscosity, Smecta forms a strong protective film on the gastrointestinal mucosa, thereby strengthening the barrier against irritants and pathogens. Smecta is used for the treatment of acute diarrhea in children in combination with rehydration solutions and in adults. In addition, it is used for the symptomatic treatment of chronic functional diarrhea in adults.
Effect
Smecta works against diarrhea by forming a protective film on the gastrointestinal mucosa and protecting it from hydrochloric acid and other irritants.
Dosage
Always take this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any questions, please contact your doctor or pharmacist. Treatment of acute diarrhea – Children from 2 years: 2 sachets daily. At the beginning of an acute diarrheal illness, the dose can be doubled (i.e. up to 4 sachets per day). Adults: The usual dose is 3 sachets per day. At the beginning of an acute diarrheal illness, the dose can be doubled (i.e. up to 6 sachets per day). Symptomatic treatment of chronic functional diarrhea – Adults: The usual dose is 3 sachets per day. If you do not feel better after 2 to 3 days or if your condition worsens, contact your doctor. Long-term or frequent use of Smecta is not recommended without consulting a doctor. The medicine is intended for oral use. Immediately before taking, the contents of the sachet should be dissolved in liquid until a suspension is formed. Children over 2 years: The contents of the sachet can be dissolved in a bottle with 50 ml of water and administered in small portions throughout the day. It can also be mixed with semi-solid foods such as broth, cooked fruit, purees, and ready-made baby foods. Adults: The contents of the sachet can be dissolved in half a glass of water.
