Properties
Ascofer is an oral medication for the treatment of iron deficiency.
Composition
The active ingredient consists of 200 mg ferrous gluconate, corresponding to 23.2 mg iron ions. One film-coated tablet contains 200 mg ferrous gluconate. Other ingredients (excipients) are: ascorbic acid, talc, potato starch, stearic acid, propylene glycol, and a red Aqua-Polish-P coating, consisting of: hypromellose, hydroxypropylcellulose, macrogol, medium-chain triglycerides of saturated fatty acids, talc, titanium dioxide (E171), Allura Red AC (E129), iron(III) oxide black (E172), and iron(III) oxide red (E1172).

Effects
Iron deficiency can impair the formation of red blood cells and tissue respiration by reducing the amount of oxygen-carrying and oxygen-consuming proteins (hemoglobin and myoglobin).
Indications
Iron deficiency associated with blood loss. Increased iron requirements (in children during rapid growth, during pregnancy or breastfeeding). Conditions associated with malabsorption or an iron-poor diet.
