Areas of Application and Effects
Fat-soluble vitamin E is an antioxidant of polyunsaturated fatty acids and phospholipids, which are components of cell membranes. It is also involved in certain metabolic processes. It stabilizes the cell membranes of red and white blood cells and protects red blood cells from hemolysis. Chronic vitamin E deficiency can lead to neurological disorders. This deficiency often occurs in malabsorption syndromes with steatorrhea, in children with biliary atresia or cystic fibrosis, as well as in artificially fed premature infants. Vitamin E penetrates all tissues and is excreted as a metabolite in the urine.
